HGV levy details – non-UK HGVs

If your vehicle weighs 12,000kg or more on a motorway or ‘A’ road in the UK you are obliged to pay the HGV levy. The levy must be paid before you drive in the UK!

The amount you need to pay depends on the:

  • weight of the vehicle, including the weight of your trailer if you have a rigid vehicle that pulls a trailer
  • vehicle’s Euro emission class
  • amount of time spent in the UK

You can pay a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly rate depending on how long the journey will last.

A day runs from 12:00 am (midnight) to 11:59pm that same day.

Non-UK heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) can use the gov.uk service to pay the levy for trips they will make on or after 1 August. To do so, please go to https://www.gov.uk/hgv-levy and proceed with the instructions provided.

For vehicles registered in the UK, the levy must be paid either every year (annually) or every 6 months. You will need to pay the levy alongside the vehicle excise duty (VED).
